The Eye Center at Southern College of Optometry (SCO) is committed to meeting the needs of patients beyond our clinical facility at 1225 Madison Avenue. Our Community Outreach program allows us to reach patients at their schools, workplace and community.
Our Community Outreach program partners with the Shelby County public school system to provide vision screenings to more than 10,000 school children each year. An agreement between SCO and Head Start has enabled us to screen thousands of children at Head Start Programs across Shelby County, Tennessee.
Our Community Outreach program takes us to local residents at community fairs, health programs and school career days. Our partners have included the Memphis Grizzlies, the City of Memphis, Girl Scouts of America, Methodist and LeBonheur Medical Systems, Lincoln Memorial University and the Special Olympics program.
We also participate in Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinics for citizens throughout Tennessee. If you would like our interns and/or doctors to participate in your community event or you need vision screening services, please contact our Coordinator of Community Outreach, Dr. Zakiya Nicks at 901-722-3374 or our Coordinator of School Vision Screenings, Dr. Lindsay Elkins at 901-722-3378
