The Eye Center at Southern College of Optometry (SCO) is committed to meeting the needs of patients beyond our clinical facility at 1225 Madison Avenue. Community Vision Health Services allows us to reach patients at their schools, workplace, and community.

Our School Screening Program partners with the Shelby County public school system to provide vision screenings to more than 12,000 school children each year. Our unique partnership, The Head Start Vision Initiative, has enabled us to screen thousands of children at Head Start Programs across Shelby County, Tennessee. This leading-edge collaboration has been recognized for its unique ability to serve those most in need. It has been supported by two American Optometric Foundation Healthy Eyes/Healthy People grants.

Our Community Outreach Program takes our doctors, staff, and interns to local residents at community fairs, church health fairs, health programs and school career days. We also participate in Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinics for citizens throughout Tennessee and the southeast.

Our Nursing Home/Assisted Living Program provides ongoing, on-site examinations with our doctors and interns.

We have recently partnered with the South Memphis Alliance to provide eye-health education and vision screenings in the unique environment of a local laundromat, which doubles as a community service coordination center.

In February of 2013, we began an ongoing partnership with the Community Alliance for the Homeless to provide comprehensive eye-health examinations, eyeglasses, and follow-up care at no cost to homeless individuals in Memphis. Through this partnership, our students, faculty, and staff will participate twice-yearly in a one-day event called Project Homeless Connect.

If you would like us to participate in your community event, need vision screening services, or would like on-site nursing home or assisted living visits, please contact:
