Michael Christensen, O.D.
Adult Primary Care, Cornea and Contact Lens
At Southern College of Optometry, Dr. Christensen is an attending faculty in the Contact Lens and Adult Primary Care Clinics. Academically, he is Director of Clinical Research with the responsibilities of providing leadership, coordination and management of clinical research activities at the college for both students and faculty.
Dr. Christensen’s early academic training was in Zoology. After receiving his Ph.D., Dr. Christensen was appointed to the Biology faculty at Phillips University in Enid Oklahoma. He taught numerous biology courses at Phillips University and was Director of the University’s Colorado Field Camp. He left in 1985 with tenure and enrolled in the optometry program at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. After graduation in 1989 and a year’s stent in private practice in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dr. Christensen was recruited by Alcon Laboratories as their Research Optometrist. His research activities involved both contact lens care products and dry eye. He retired from Alcon in 2012 after 22 years and having attained the position of Associate Director. Dr. Christensen was then recruited by Southern College of Optometry to assume the position of Director of Clinical Research/Associate Professor.
Dr. Christensen holds optometry licenses in Oklahoma, Texas and Tennessee. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and holds membership in the American Optometric Association, AOA Contact Lens Section Member, ARVO, and TFOS (Tear film and Ocular Surface Society). He has been author or co-author on numerous scientific publications including original scientific papers and poster presentations.
